To promote the innovation and technology transfer, the Paris Public Hospital Autority (AP-HP, "Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris"), Saint-Louis hospital provides laboratories and office space for companies. This approach is implemented with the University Institute of Haematology (IUH), and is aimed at bringing together, on one geographical site, training centres, research laboratories, clinical services and industrial structures for research and development.
These facilities are offered to companies that are active in the field of drugs, medical devices and medical diagnosis. The facility is not an incubator, but is designed to house emerging companies (with adequate back-up) as well as mature companies whose head offices, production or research & development structures are located elsewhere in France or abroad. However, it cannot be a "mere" business park. Thus, a scientific committee ensures that there is an industrial development project that is not only consistent with the site's medical and research projects (haematology-oncology-transplantation), but is also carried out in conjunction with the hospital's and IUH's teams.
Reception of the companies
Initially, approximately 400 m² of floor space located within the historical precincts of the hospital is provided for the companies. This space is divided into 10 areas of variable sizes and comprises approximately 70% rooms that are technically fit to house laboratory equipment and 30% office space. The housing agreements are drawn up for two-year periods.
Company selection
This housing of companies can only be considered in the context of a joint research & development project with the hospital's and/or IUH's teams: it must be a real public-private scientific collaboration. A scientific committee checks the suitability of the companies selected with respect to the main areas of the site's medical and research projects.
Companies seeking to be housed within the Saint-Louis's IPP must fill out an application form. Each project will be appraised by a member of the committee and two experts from outside the Saint-Louis site. The company must then set out its project in an oral presentation. The decision is discussed in a plenary session and conveyed to the candidate, together with a reasoned explanation in the event of rejection.
Companies housed in 2005
Three companies are lodged on the platform since 2005: Genetix France, Myosix and UroGene. More than 200 m² are still available.
Research Collaboration
Research and collaboration or services agreements definite the co-operations terms between industrial companies and IUH's or hospital's teams or specialized platforms. The purpose of these agreements is to set forth the general collaboration conditions and the contributions as average personnel, techniques and financial of each one. Moreover, they also envisage the conditions of the intellectual and industrial property's sharing and of the rights of publications. Such collaboration can be developed with companies that are not housed in situ.
