Founded by Prof. Jean BERNARD in 1958, the "Institut Universitaire d'Hématologie" (IUH) is located at the Saint-Louis Hospital.

Three key ideas drive the activities of the institute:
- Target research efforts on leukemia, cancer and blood diseases;
- Focus all the research abilities and techniques on the same objective; and
- Stimulate a constant dialogue between clinicians who cure and researchers who explore the causes, the mechanisms of disease and the therapeutic effects.

With this strategy numerous treatments of leukemias, lymphomas and cancers as well as tissue typing for organ and bone marrow transplantation have been discovered.
Especially these major achievements:

-
First complete remission of acute leukemia in 1947 (Prof. Jean BERNARD).
- Cure of leukemic child (Prof. Gérard SCHAISON).
- HLA complex (Prof. Jean DAUSSET - Nobel Prize in 1980).
- Leukemia treatment by differentiation (Prof. Laurent DEGOS - General Motors Prize in 1994).
- Bone marrow transplantation with umbilical cord blood cells (Prof. Eliane GLUCKMAN - Ham Wassermann Prize in 1998).
- Molecular portraits of tumors (Prof. François SIGAUX).

Directors of the Institute:
Prof. Jean BERNARD 1961-1980
Prof. Michel BOIRON 1980-1993
Prof. Laurent DEGOS 1993-2003
Prof. François SIGAUX 2003

An Institute with an original Status:
The IUH, which is part of "University ParisVII - Denis Diderot", is an institute governed by article L.713-9 of the new code of "National Education" (article 33 of the Savary act). The objectives of the IUH include Research and Education. IUH prerogatives and organization are similar to those of a Faculty of Medicine, but the fields of application focuse on the following: hematology, cancer research, immunology, virology, genetics and therapeutic biotechnologies.
